Thou Shalt Be Evicted
Well, it looks like it’s not only an American thing anymore… Canada’s The Globe and Mail reported today that small towns in British Columbia are choosing to evict sex offenders as well:
Kamloops — A convicted sex offender doesn’t seem welcome anywhere in the B.C. Interior.
Public pressure forced David Caza out of Merritt after he moved there when he was released from jail last week.
He relocated to Kamloops, but local Conservative MP Betty Hinton says Kamloops residents may want to follow Merritt’s lead in evicting him.
She says she believes the people of Kamloops do not want a high-risk sex offender in their midst.
So, what’s a sex offender supposed to do?
The problem that people think about, but don’t seem to care about, is that not all of these sex offenders have done something horrible. Dallas criminal lawyer, David Finn, defines a sex offender as follows:
Now, that said, it looks to me as if not all sex offenders are monsters. Sure there’s the odd priest person who indulges in the non-consensual molestation of children, but it doesn’t mean that every person who is a convicted sex offender is automatically going to be a danger to society.
A few months ago, the infamous Montreal-based serial sex killer Carla Homolka was released from prison. Although Carla and her husband abducted, tortured, raped and murdered two teenage girls back in the early 90s, I wasn’t at all afraid due to her release. When it comes to high profile sex offenders like this, the media almost enjoys reporting on it.
I guess it’s kind of like the old saying “The Russians are coming… the Russians are coming!” The truth is, no matter who is coming, the world will keep on turning and our anxiety will subside once we realize that the threat was just media hype. While in prison, these people receive a lot of counceling, and after their release they are well monitored and the location of their residence is public knowledge.
If all countries start evicting sex offenders, where will they go? If sending them to prison is simply a formality, why not just banish them all to an island from the beginning? It seems ridiculous to send them to prison to pay for their rehabilitation and then banish them once they are considered rehabilitated.
Oh well, it doesn’t surprise me that it’s a Conservative MP trying to evict the sex offender in British Columbia…

idk Kitka… i think you have too much faith in the “correctional” system! I’ll have to take a page out of Outlaw’s book & say, “why don’t you let them move in with you!”
I’m not trying to be an asshole… we just have different points of view on this one! I like “gettin down” just as much as the next guy… but u gotta be real sick to rape an innocent woman or molest a child to get your jollies! castration sounds like a good option to me.

Your right Zawm, rapist and pedophiles are disturbed people that should be monitored. But Kitka’s highlighting the fact that those dangerous sex offenders are being lumped in with people whose only crime was deviency.
In some areas, deviency includes S&M or even masturbation at home! A while ago I read about a teenager who was charged with sexual assault because he asked an old lady if she would go out with him. Should he now be placed on the sex offenders list?
There are also those damned souls who had too many drinks one night and made a really bad decision. Damned not just because of the act, but damned everyday by their own guilt for what they have done. They are truly remorseful; do they need to be further reminded everyday about it?
I am not saying they should be let off. I am saying that there are some obvious lines here that are completely ignored by the overall label saying Sex Offender.

I hear ya - common sense tells us that as long as all parties go into something conscentually then no there is nothing wrong - no offence has been committed. Unfortunately the law doesn’t always reflect that. Like the States that still have sodomy on the books as a crime - regardless of whether the act is conscentual or not!

I do not think castration is the answer. It is my understanding that some sex offenders choose castration as a form of treatment yet still have thoughts of rape and continue to rape. Also, you do not need a working penis to rape someone.
The “not in my backyard” kind of thinking applies to many dangers we face. Then in whose backyard? I don’t have any answers, but I tend to lean towards life time sentences for many kinds of sex offenders. It is a price we have to pay as a society to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.

“The RCMP say Caza has 42 convictions for sexual and violent offences as well as for possessing and making child pornography. They also say he targets male children and is a high risk to re-offend” according to CHBC.com (A television station in the Okanagan, where all this is going on)

Thank you, Winter. It would have helped if the Globe and Mail had added that little bit of helpful information to their article! Don’t you just LOVE how the media omits certain key information…
For all those interested in seeing the article Winter was referring to, here is the link:

Hey, sorry I haven’t stopped by in awhile–busy, busy, busy. The I-pod porn looks yummie. Anyways, my stance on sex offenders: They are human beings. They deserve fair trail, fair sentancing if convicted (if), and freedom from double jeopardy and or punishment after their time is served. I in no way condone their actions, but how we treat the least among us reflects on the treatment we all can expect. Did some one say something like that once?
The real issue is giving the proper treatment. You know, something that decreases recidivism. Not branding someone for life or baring them from a certain place, never giving them a chance to start over and lead a better life. Are we going to go back to branding the scarlet letter on adulters? Why should we do the same with molesters?

This is a hard one to work out within, I understand the need for protection, when the news is filled with kids being snatched raped and murdered. Well it does give one pause and the fear begins.
But I dont agree with the idea of holding a person accountable for actions that they have already paid for in jail time etc.
Seems that we are caught in a conundrum as to what to do.
I personally think one of the best things we could do is demystify sex finally. So that children dont need to be so sheltered to not know what it is and how it works etc. Teach them about their bodies, teach them that THEY OWN their bodies and to have pride in them.
I don’t know in all honesty…
I feel for those with children who do feel these fears …
as much as I feel for those who did offend and are trying to make amends for their crimes. Yet can’t due to the fact that ( even if they never offend again) they will always wear the name and moniker of SEX OFFENDER. To never be given their due for staying true and not dwelling back in the darkness that caused the offense in the first place.
It is not an easy path to walk

It would be in everyones best interest too have his pedophile ass evicted out of all major cities asap, he is a high risk to reoffend, as he is currently residing across the street from a elementary school in kamloops, how does this happen? we should ask the kamloops probation services as well as the rest of the public from kamloops.
Aren’t you kamloopsians wondering why his landlord rented to him? someone should ask someday, if he comes within a foot of my kids he’ll learn to stay away from kids forever i vow.
