Shopper’s Sex Mart
Not only does Wal-Mart have great prices… but soon they will be stocking sex toys:
Better believe it. Shoppers Drug Mart, the country’s largest drugstore chain, Wal-Mart Canada and a slew of other stores have entered into agreements to stock their shelves, coast to coast, with a new line of sex toys, discreetly called “sexual well-being products.”
The move is especially surprising for Wal-Mart, which doesn’t sell video games rated “adult-only” and recently removed a magazine from one of its stores after a customer complained that it was too sexual.
But Wal-Mart Canada spokesman Kevin Groh said the product line is a good fit, as the company caters to the Canadian mainstream and, as such, carries products that reflect mainstream tastes.
He added, however, that some of Wal-Mart’s customers will undoubtedly disapprove. “It would be naive of us to think every product we stock would meet the approval of every single customer in the store.”
This is a great day for Canadians… By selling sex toys in mainstream stores such as Wal-Mart and Shopper’s Drug Mart, companies have now admitted one of the main differences between Canada and the United States. While American Wal-Marts stock guns, Canadian Wal-Marts will be stocking sex aides.

Wal-Mart USA has far too much economic power. In response to Christian customers they’ve stopped carrying such harmless junk as Maxim. And I think the Cosmo Girl is now hidden behind some sort of envelope that conceals much of the, ahem, sinful cover.
My lover and I have discussed moving to Canada but my job is immovable so I guess I’ll have to remain in the world’s largest sitcom.

I read this article this morning shortly before lunch, and during my lunch break, I heard the DJ’s from CKOI 96.9 FM talk about it, saying that part of the decision is because there is a market for women (mostly) who would like to buy sex toys but are too ashamed to walk into a sex shop.
OK, fine, they won’t have to walk into a sex shop. But does this mean they would be more conformatble picking up a Cybercock 3000 with 5-speed, voice-activation, g-spot locator, lawn-mowing capabilities, etc… at a local Walmart?
In a sex shop, the sales people are there to sell sex toys and accessories, and the customers are there to buy sex toys and accessories. In a Walmart, the lady behind you could be accompanied by her 6 kids, buying clothes and diapers, and you’re there paying for a plastic schlong.
I think it’s a really good move for Walmart in terms of offering a wider variety of products for their customer base, but are people going to have the cojones to actually purchase them? Only time will tell.

If you look at the full article you’ll see that they aren’t actually selling dildos, the sex toys they are selling are very discreet… most people wouldn’t see it as being a sex toy because it’s packaged to look more like a beauty product. The company also acknowledges that women are feeling more fiesty about trying sex toys but don’t necessarily want something obvious… there are many interesting items that I’ve seen on sites recently that look so discreet… like a lipstick tube (but it’s a vibrator)… or a “massage egg”. They are all sex toys, but they are not typical taboo ones.
