Sexing up Singapore

Uniquely Singapore

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Announcements were made this week that Singapore will have its first sex talk show on local television. The show announcement comes after plans have been set for Singapore to host its very first sex exposition, Sexpo 2005, from November 18-20 this year.

With all this sex-related news, it would seem that Singapore may be taking steps to liberate the oppressed society from its conservative laws. However, on closer inspection, it doesn’t seem to have changed much at all. Last month, an American citizen was arrested for importing 58 porn DVDs. In the same article, Reuters reported that:

Despite efforts to loosen some of its social controls, many tough rules remain in Singapore. “Playboy” magazine is banned, while oral sex remains technically illegal under a law that says “whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animals” can be fined and jailed up to 10 years, or even for life.

So, while the Catholic Church UK is teaching teenagers the benefits of oral sex as an alternative to penetrative sex, oral sex offenders in Singapore can be sentenced to life imprisonment? Is this the mark of a sexually liberated society? I don’t think so.

What I want to know is how the hosts of Sexpo 2005 and the new sex talk television series ever got permission to do something so taboo…

Interestingly, from some experience of hip single women in Singapore, there’s a _lot_ of casual sex going on. At least what appears to me to be a helluva lot more than my conservative little hometown of Los Angeles. I’m wondering if safety is an issue? As a girl I think it would be a lot more scary to indulge impulsive gratification in more dangerous places like the US than in societies with very little violent crime.

[…] Interesting that such a conservative society as Singapore is managing to change so drastically ever since Sex in the City first aired on their boob tubes. […]
