Hershey’s Contraceptives
In an ideal world, contraception would be in the form of a Hershey’s kiss and you would only need to ingest it once a year. Unfortunately, we live in reality; a place where you either take the pill once a day, take the injection once every few months or wear a magical contraceptive band-aid every single day. As Avery Brooks asked in an IBM commercial in the year 2000, “where are the flying cars?”
I read a troubling article today in the Montreal Mirror that quoted the abortion rate in the province of Quebec,
Canada, as being “42.6 abortions per 100 births” in the year 2002. This is a troubling number, especially since it is approaching numbers similar only to a third world country. One of the problems with the article, however, is that the author does not mention how Canada approved the sales of Plan B (a.k.a. the morning after pill) over the counter in April 2005. Obviously once Plan B is available without prescription, the abortion rate should decrease to a rate more acceptable to Christian Conservatives.
What is ridiculous, though, is that it seems like the US is trying to match the third world rate by indefinitely postponing the FDA’s approval of selling Plan B without a prescription. It seems that Theocratic leaders misunderstand that Plan B would actually help to reduce the abortion rate in the US… isn’t that what Christian conservatives want? I was glad to hear today that the Director of FDA’s Office of Women’s Health, Susan Wood, resigned in protest of the postponement.
May Plan B someday be accessible as easily (and as tastily) as Hershey’s kisses…

Great article. I am just sad I dont know how to reply properly, though, since I want to show my appreciation like many other.
